The Hunger Games 2012 full movie set in a certain part in the future, this is an alternate United States with a huge class gap between people from the districts living a hardscrabble existence and those from the Capitol who lead highly stylised, decadent existences.
The 12 districts are paying dearly for an uprising, and the Capital now demands the price of 1 boy and 1 girl from each district each year to compete in The Hunger Games as tributes. The games are a test of instinct, survival bloodthirstiness, where 24 kids go in and only 1 comes out.
Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) is a smart girl who knows her way around a bow and arrow. When it comes time for District 12’s ‘reaping’ (where the tributes are selected), Katniss volunteers to take the place of her younger, weaker sister. Along with the male tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) they travel to the city for the games.
But first they need to be transformed to suit the capitol’s tastes – and catch the attention of citified sponsors who will help tributes win the more they like you.
This is a long film – 2.5 hours – and I don’t think it’s one for the casual viewer. Of all the films made based on teen alternate reality book series (I’m looking at you Twilight and Harry Potter) this is the one where you need to read the books first. And preferably be a fan of said books. The Hunger Games isn’t boring exactly but is very procedural for the casual viewer as the masses of book information is glossed over in the film. I think this is the sort of story where you need the background to build up a passion and intensity for the characters, to love them and care about them. I don’t think the film has the time to explore this.
The Hunger Games film also spends a lot of time introducing characters that aren’t entirely necessary for this film, but may well come into their own in the next film (Gale Hawthorne played by Australia’s own Liam Hemsworth is a prime example). The film has an big sense of “To Be Continued” about it.
There are however, plenty of well known faces in the film. Lenny Kravitz plays the District 12 image maker with Elizabeth Banks the district organiser and Woody Harrelson the district advisor. Stanley Tucci is the games commentator and Donald Sutherland plays the President.
Jennifer Lawrence is the star though, and does a good job as Katniss Everdeen, a surly teen from a dirt poor coal mining community who hunts her own food… essentially the same character she played in A Winter’s Bone!
The Hunger Games is a violent film – these kids are menacing and lethal and seem to prefer to take out the competition in hand to hand combat with swords, knives and spears. Beware the M rating!
The Hunger Games 2012 movie was hard going for me, being an outsider to The Hunger Games fan club. This is one for the fans of the novel only.
